When You Don't Know What to Write
Your Author is still writing your story.
Writing is a beautiful companion that grows with you.
Yet, sometimes, there are bumps in the road.
My writing style has developed and changed. As circumstances in my life change, so too does my writing. Moving my blog over to Substack has also influenced me. I have been inspired by so many wonderful Substack writers.
A continual prayer that I have been trying to lean into, regardless of what my circumstances are, is:
“God, what do You want me to write today?”
The goal is turn to Him often for help with my writing.
Why?
It was God who called me to be a writer in the first place. And, I believe it is important I return to Him constantly for guidance. This should be true of any vocation the Lord calls us to. It is important to return to Him often in conversation. Like you would speak with a best friend about what’s going on in life, so too can you speak to Jesus.
Sometimes though, I hit road bumps in my writing journey. There have been many days where I don’t feel motivated, and I don’t know what to write.
Questions that come to mind in conversation with God are:
“Is this truly where You want me to be?”
“How do I serve You today?”
“Lord, help me to think clearly when my brain stalls.”
What can be comforting is relinquishing some control. As I discussed in one of my recent devotions called, Lord, Show Me the Way, this isn’t saying to not plan anything or to disregard the free will you have in your life to make decisions. Rather, it is acknowledging the source and Giver of life. Simply put, as I am trying to remember to do often: ask Him for help.
When you don’t know what to write, turn to your own Author.
When you don’t know what words to put on the page, ask the Creator for inspiration.
And if that still isn’t helping, sit in silence with Him.
When you don’t know what to write literally on the page, or figuratively in your life, trust that He is still writing your own story.
In Christ,
