Camping Beside Still Waters
Stay close to Him.
It’s important to set up camp close to God.
Camping is one of my favorite summer activities. From morning coffee brewed over a propane stove to evening conversation beside the campfire, I enjoy the time outside and away from the hustle and bustle of normal life. It’s quite refreshing to not have enough cell service to load my email!
Twice this summer, I have camped at a campground beside a lake. And, while lying in my tent and visiting the lakeside each day, I came to reflect on the image from scripture of a tree planted by the water.
“They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.”
- Psalm 1:3, NRSV-CE
Camping beside a lake is a great reminder of this beautiful Psalm.
Water is necessary for life. We need it, and not only is it a necessity, it brings refreshment. In the heat of a summer day, respite can be found in the cool waters of a lake. Campgrounds by a lake seem to always be popular, and I think there is a reason for this.
The lake is always available for one to relax and cool off in. There are also things to do on the lake like boating, water skiing, and kayaking. Additionally, and maybe my favorite, there is the gift of simply sitting on the shore and gazing at the beautiful scenery. Being near the water naturally fosters rest and peace.
“He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul.” - Psalm 23:2-3, RSV-CE
Camping near a lake is an earthly reminder of the invitation to stay close to God. The peace found near a lake on a hot day is a wonderful taste of the ultimate peace that can be found in God’s presence.
Like a tree planted by the water, we are invited to draw near to the source of life: God.
Today, I hope you will pitch your tent near the Lord, and join Him for a cup of coffee by the campfire.
Starting a conversation with the Lord is always a good idea.
