Hi there! I thought it was time for a little reintroduction 👋🏻

My name is Lauren Paradis Seymour. I created The Persistent Christian, one year ago, as a place to share my writing. I hold a master's degree in theology & leadership, and writing became a healthy outlet for me when I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. This diagnosis prompted me to resign from my ministry position at my local parish, and it led me forward into many months of intense treatment, that left me physically, mentally, and spiritually drained. Furthermore, in the midst of all this, my twin brother passed away at age 28, after a life long battle with epilepsy.

Writing brought me closer to the Lord in these times of great pain. The Lord showed me how to turn my suffering over to Him. He taught me quite a lot and showed me where He wants me to be through one of the most difficult seasons of my life.

In the recent years, prayer apps have gotten more popular. In the mornings, sometimes I am so tired, it is helpful to listen to a prayer. A prayer app I use and highly recommend is called Hallow. One morning, I chose to listen to a Hallow “Daily Reflection” led by Jeff Cavins, a biblical scholar. He has such amazing insight. The reflection for the day was based on Luke 5:1-11, about the story of Simon and his brother putting their net out again into the deep waters at Jesus’ request. As I finished listening it hit me: We too, as Christians, must go into the deep water in our spiritual lives.

My twin brother, Kyle passed away on Sept 16, 2024 after a 25 year battle with epilepsy. He was the strongest person I have ever known, and life has been very different without him. There are no words to explain the kind of grief that comes with the loss of a twin. Yet, my Christian faith reminds me that I will get to see him again one day. Kyle just got to go first! He is not truly gone, but rather experiencing a new existence in perfect glory with God.

I constantly seek the peace that only God can give, that transcends my understanding. The anxieties of this life can be overwhelming. Yet, God promises His peace to those who turn to Him. That peace may not come in the way we expect, but it, “. . . will guard [our] hearts and [our] minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:7). We are never alone, we are never forgotten, and we are loved by the One who knows us perfectly.

Today is the first day of #lymeawarenessmonth

In the summer of 2023, I was diagnosed with chronic bartonellosis and Lyme disease. I found out that I have likely had these vector borne infections for most of my life, and I had no idea these infections were a likely cause of my wide variety of mental and physical health symptoms. This prompted my resignation from my youth ministry position to pursue treatment.

It was a major turning point in my faith life. Either I keep my pain and struggling to myself, or I turn it into something beautiful in pursuit of my savior, Jesus.

A year after resigning from my job, I created The Persistent Christian as a place to share my walk with Jesus and my journey towards healing. My relationship with God affects all aspects of my health: mental, physical, and spiritual.

My transition from ministry to a writing career was no easy one, and it continues to be a learning experience. I am currently working on my first book, as well as run The Persistent Christian.

Almost two years later, I am almost at the conclusion of my Lyme disease treatment. It has been two years of high dose antibiotic treatment/regular lab work/constant symptom monitoring. Many of my mental and physical symptoms that I thought I'd live with for the rest of my life are resolved or greatly improved.

But, while I am kicking b.burgdorferi out of my body, writing is here to stay. God taught me that even in my most difficult trials, I can turn them into something that glorifies Him.

Today is the first day of #lymeawarenessmonth

Hi! 👋🏻 Lauren here. I don't often show my face around here, but thought I'd pop in and say thank you!💕

I started writing after I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and bartonellosis almost two years ago. My diagnosis prompted me to resign from my youth ministry job so that I could pursue intense antibiotic treatment. Writing is something I found that I can do from home, even on the days when my body doesn't let me get off the couch.

Last summer, I decided to start posting my devotionals on my own website. It is scary to share this part of myself, but I am so grateful for the amazing support I have received from family, friends, and strangers (turned friends) alike!

I named the blog, The Persistent Christian, because despite my trials, I strive to persistently keep turning back to the Lord. It's not easy though. In my devotional writing on the blog, you will find stories of my own walk, my attempts to be a persistent Christian, scriptural meditations, as well as reflections on my Catholic faith.

I created this Instagram page to go along with the website. While I post more frequent mini devotions, scriptures, and devotional summaries here, you can find my full length devotions on my website. Have you ever thought about what it would have been like to witness Jesus’ crucifixion? During the season of Lent, we have the opportunity to reflect deeply on the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf 2,000 years ago. Many people may not want to consider the details, because the crucifixion is a painful thing to think about. However, I see the crucifixion as a brutally honest, yet extremely important reminder of the magnitude of God’s love for us. It is crucial that we do not forget what God did on our behalf. While the details can be painful, the message is clear: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (Jn 3:16). Jesus endured so much for us.

It's amazing how different translations affect the scripture verse. My personal Bible is The Great Adventure Bible which is the RSV-2CE (Revised Standard Version, 2nd Catholic Edition). (@ascensionpress thank you for such a great Bible) Psalm 51:12 in that translation is: "Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit."

However, the NCB (New Catholic Bible) version really spoke to me for this verse. Psalm 51:12, NCB "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a resolute spirit within me."

This Lent, I am praying for the Lord to renew my spirit and create in me a clean heart ❤️

Lent is here. Many Christian traditions observe Lent, including my own, the Catholic faith. If you are among those who do not observe Lent, I still invite you to continue reading. What is Lent really about? What's the big deal with Fridays and fasting? Is any of this really important?

In my faith tradition, Lent is a time of deep self reflection, prayer, almsgiving, and fasting. Lent invites the person to reflect on the state of their spiritual life and to spend more time in prayer. It is also a time to give alms to both those we love and those in need. The Catholic Church also requires and invites those in good health and of certain age to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and from meat on all Fridays of Lent.

But what if you can't fast due to medical issues? Does fasting also include other things?

I believe fasting can be very powerful when we fast from the things that distract us from God.

"the Lord my God lightens my darkness" -Psalm 18:28

In Psalm 18, David described how the Lord protected him from his enemies. It paints a picture of a God who will defend his people. In the Psalm, we find the above verse. I find it so applicable to a variety of situations.

In David's, it was the Lord lightening the darkness of his battle with his enemy.

In mine, the Lord has lightened my darkest days of depression, grief, and sorrow.
